Lusaka, Zambia 22nd June 2023 – Standard CharteredBank has taken significant steps towards supporting the arts sector in Zambia. The Bank announced last week that it has invested $35,000 into its Zambian art collection at its iconic Head Office Building.
Speaking during a client event dubbed ‘A Celebration of our Zambian Art,’ CEO, Sonny Zulu, said, “Today, Standard Chartered is proud to celebrate our Zambian Art and the role we are playing to support the creative industry here in Zambia. Our iconic Head Office building boasts 39 piece of priceless artwork that we purchased locally from Zambian artists – many of whom are women artists. These artworks have been placed strategically in this state-of-the-art building to not only add to the aesthetics of our building, but to also create a serene work environment for our employees where they can feel at home and focus on delivering for you, our clients.”
Mr Zulu added that the art pieces were strategically placed at the client event to both serve as an exhibition and also promote the pieces to both local and international guests present at the event.
“By providing such support to local talent (artists), we believe that we are helping to support the growth of the entrepreneurial spirit among our locals. We see the creative industry playing a pivotal role in spurring economic growth,as well as job creation in Zambia,” said Mr. Zulu.
The creative industry contributes to sustainable development goals by generating income, export earnings and creating jobs. Creative goods and services boost economies and contribute to inclusive social development, as well as dialogue and understanding between people.
Investing in creative industries, particularly in design and creative services and visual arts and crafts can improve livelihoods for local communities, whilst expanding business opportunities for SMEs.
There is evidence to suggest that a thriving creative economy can foster related sectors such as tourism and manufacturing, and encourage innovation and creativity.
